Poverty & Education

There are many families all over the world that is living in poverty and this is something that can be very harmful to a student and their education. As college students, we often overlook other families and students who are struggling to get by day to day but sometimes, it is important to take a step back and remember that there are people who are struggling, and try to think about what you can ultimately do to help, even if it is a small act of kindness.

Over this winter break, I am going to volunteer for 2 weeks in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic to help work in a classroom and teach children English. These young students are living in poverty and do not have the same educational experience as we do here in the United States. I think a lot about these students as we are taking a course on learning with technology, when there are some students out there that are not even able to afford a notebook, never mind learning how to use technology. I hope that someday we can shatter the cycle of poverty so that all children and students can be able to get the same learning experience as everyone else.

  1. Jordan,
It is amazing that uou are going to the Dominican republic. I think its awesome that you are fighting for such a big cause all over the world. Poverty is something that American we can't really put an eye to because its not always in front of us. For example here on snhu everyone can afford there education so we see not many people struggling, if one goes to a soup kitchen in downtown manchester then we see where this poverty has hit home. Things like going to the Dominican or helping out a soup kitchen are eye opening experiences

  2. You are definitely right Jordan, poverty is often overlooked even though so many people are in this category. It just seems that although we learn about other cultures in our classes, it is harder to actually put a real life perspective to it. Going to the Dominican for a couple weeks will greatly improve your perspective, and I have to give you a lot of credit for doing it. Not only does volunteering our time help us feel better about ourselves, but it helps make just that much of a difference. You will not be able to fight poverty, but you can help out the people suffering from it by just offering your help. What you are doing will not only be helpful, but it will be a great learning experience.

  3. I'm so excited to spend two weeks in Monte Cristi with you! it will be such an amazing opportunity and we will learn so much about poverty and education. We will be able to take what we learn back to the U.S. and it will make us better teachers in the long run! This will be such a life changing trip and i can't wait!

  4. I think that it is amazing that you have the opportunity to travel to Monte Cristi and teach children English. I agree with what you said about how being in college we tend to over look people in poverty. I think we definitely need to take a step back when we are learning how to implement technology in the classroom, yet some students can't even afford a notebook. I think what you're going to be doing is going to be extremely helpful.
